I wish, but I don't believe you can. Even a programmable remote would probably have to be set to (for example): home, left, down, select.
The only device I know of with remote shortcuts are the crap (imo) Rokus, and those are un programmable advertising buttons.
In Nougat (on Shield TV, not sure about Mi Box) you can double-tap the home button and it will show recently opened apps similar to the Android OS multi-window key.
If you have a keyboard attached alt+tab brings up the normal recents screen that other Android devices have, but at least for me it seems to kill whatever you used the combo to switch away from as doing it again doesn't show the thing you were switching from in the list
