Does anybody know a reason why both VLC and MX Player would stop working (freeze on opening or just open to a white screen), while Kodi works just fine? I have rebooted and full reset the Mi Box, but the issues persist.

I just use Kodi for all media and X-plore for file browsing/USB.
MX Player immediately scans any USB storage you have attached to your player the moment you open it. VLC might do the same thing. That's all I can think of.
As a side note:
MX Player is so good on Android Phone, but I don't see a reason to use it on Android TV, it's stripped to the bone in comparison to the phone version.
I guess if you just have some files on a USB stick attached to your player it does OK. Even then it's missing some options for me.
I feel the same way about VLC for ATV in comparison to Kodi.
