Has anyone used an SSD with Mi box as adoptable storage?

The Mi box's shitty external usb conundrum is pissing me off big time. you can either use a usb drive as a read only external storage, or 'start-from-scratch' internal storage. the internal storage option would have been ok if it didnt slow down the box. so i'm wondering if using an ssd improves that?

An SSD would be a complete waste, it'll be bottlenecked by the USB 2 port

I use a 4tb wd passport and it's fine for tomorrow night of hd and 4k content.

SSD probably isn't much faster because it's not usb 3.0.

I use an old 1tb external 3.5" hard drive as internal storage. I don't notice a big difference in speed.
