New Android TV YouTube App Rant/Review

by Cash091

Some of the changes to the new YouTube App are great, but others just baffle me.

They made totally unnecessary changes just making the app more difficult to use.

The keyboard changed from the default device keyboard (QWERTY on my nVidia Shield) to ABCDEF. Not only this, but you need to go to a different screen for numbers. Typing something like "4K" into the search bar used to be so easy, now it's more time consuming ten fold. There is plenty of space for the numbers on the same screen too, and that's what gets me the most. It wouldn't be as bad if they used the space.

I get that having ABCDEF allows you to have the same keyboard across different locations, but just use the default device keyboard!

The video controls irk me even more... They removed the FF/REW buttons and replaced them with Next Video buttons. I've already skipped ahead quickly without wanting to. They moved the control to the video bar, which I can get used to... but left a TON of empty space below, and that bothers me. They removal of like/dislike adds a bunch of work. I usually like videos as it helps support the content creators, and now it's more difficult for no reason. It was two clicks to like a video before. Now, it's 7 or 8.

May not seem like a big deal, but it's just baffling. They cleaned it up and I'll admit it looks nice, but you can keep the like buttons, FF/REW buttons, and stock keyboard, and still have a clean design. In today's world simplicity is key and this seems like an unnecessary complication.

I do like the inclusion of the top bar in the home page. It's nice to be able to explore more of YouTube as opposed to staying in my own little corner, he bar itself to control the video isn't that bad once you get used to it, and the inclusion of a 4K icon is really nice as well. There was some issue with audio on 4K videos for me. This went away quickly so I attribute it to some weird network hiccup. I think if that keeps happening I'll roll it back because that's a big issue for me. I watch a lot of LTT videos in 4K, and another change they made was quality controls are MUCH more difficult to get to. I'm not even sure you can to be honest.

I really hope a future update brings back the default keyboard and changes the video control bar to include more buttons. This would make the app nearly perfect.

Let's not forget removing the ability to change channels. My default login has nothing on it. The update essentially wiped my system clean of everything. I reverted back to the old version almost immediately. I've been waiting years for a live streaming bug to be fixed with an update and when it finally is I have to immediately go back to the buggy version and continue to stream live video from my phone instead. Thanks google, what an update!

I think this is a sign that Google is going to abandon the Android TV platform. The fact that this exact interface is useable on the web makes me think they are realigning things so they can do the minimal amount of effort to run out the clock on supporting existing Android TV devices. YouTube is a big deal for Google, if they are dumbing it down this much, there's a reason.

What bothers me the most is the removal of the ff/rwd from my controller triggers. What was really easy became a pain in the ass by having to click to display the interface, then move focus to the scroll bar, then use joystick to fast forward or rewind. Someone at Google should get fired. Their app in their platform. Incompetence at (not doing their) work.

Tuned into my Nexus Player to check in on my YouTube subscriptions today to discover this new version of the Youtube App. WTF Google? Why do companies go out of their way to make things worse? I can't choose my video quality anymore? Why? So if I have a capped bandwidth service I can't control that anymore. I can't see if I'm playing 1080p when I only need 720p because that's all my TV will display? I can't reduce the quality of a podcast video and increase the quality of a nature documentary? Why did this new "improved" version of the App freeze twice so far today while playing videos while the old version never did? Why does everything get worse over time? Why does this new version randomly interrupt videos to play ads instead of just playing them in the beginning? Oh I think I now know why we have this piece of shit.

Lol this is not even new.

They just trolled us.

This " app " uses Cobalt web Browser to take us to the YouTube/tv site

Lololol.

They just killed the YouTube app for Android TV.

Do thru think we are stupid???

Revert this crap back

On my shield, 1080p60 video freezes about 10 seconds in while sound keeps playing.

Most videos now look like badly dubbed foreign movies. How is it even possible to have out of sync sound in the year of our lord 2017?

Update uninstalled.

ShortFuse

It's just running this website now: https://www.youtube.com/tv

Seems like Google gave up on the native version. They're using Cobalt web-framework.

I used a different YouTube account than my Google account. Now I can't use my youtu.be account anymore. The YouTube app is worthless to me now. WELL DONE.

No "Watch Later" button either. Seriously, why not? It's that hard to implement?

wolfgang187

The scanning is much slower than it was with this update. Going from 0:00 to 43:03 in a video took me a full few minutes. Kinda nuts for a video in 2017...

After reading this, I'm glad my Shield hasn't updated yet!

Yeah I rather liked the old version, this version is the same as ps4/xb1 versions now, I wasn't a big fan of those.

I also don't like that you have to press OK for everything it doesn't auto switch between home/subscriptions. Oh well.

Came here for the same reason. Ewww what an update. Had to uninstall the update from my Nvidia Shield.

At least I can now use my other channel.

For us who have Android tvs like Sony:

The worst is no 4k. No HDR.

It was promised by Sony that our tvs would have HDR support. How will this SITE send a message to the tv that's playing HDR content? It's just a browser. The tv won't get any messages from the YouTube thing.

They did this without even noticing they were hurting Sony in the process . LOL

I like that it doesn't have the interface when you start a video. That's pretty much it though. I wish I could select a channel that was my "home" screen. I watch funhaus every day. I want that to be the first thing I see when I start the app.

I came expecting to see people say they like it.... I've seen comments on this sub and the shield sub saying "Google doesn't care about AndroidTv look at the YouTube app it's so basic"

Personally I like it. I don't game on my shield, I have a variety of tastes cars, league of legends/gaming, hip hop news, music videos. The recommendations are so spot on. I know where subscriptions are so I can check them when I want. I think the new setup allows for more binge watching new content based on what you like.

Another thing I notice is they integrated some of their YouTubegaming and live section.

Overall it's deeper to get to deeper areas of youtube. It reminds me a lot of the Xbox One app maybe PS4 but I've never used PS4.

You can select the circle on the scrub bar and fast forward or rewind so I don't understand those complaints.
