RIP Native Youtube App: YouTube now runs on Web-based Cobalt Framework

God damn this update is such a huge regression over the current build on my shield tv. Youtube is my tv. I dont sub to any directv or ota service from anyone. This is maddening. Heres hoping Google makes some rapid updates to bring it to its current usable state.

They can run it on a potato as far as I'm concerned, as long as it doesn't lose the functionality it had, like no longer supporting the YouTube channels. This better be a bug or oversight, or else it'll piss of lots of people.

Worst app update ever.

Here's the Cobalt App URL: https://www.youtube.com/tv

Also the current version lost support for 4K, at least it did on my Sony TV. Max is 1440p now. Seriously, an computer-literate cat could make a better app than this.

Wow what a drop in quality. At least updates will come sooner but man...

So that's why the new app is such a raging piece of shit.

I uninstalled updates and turned auto updates off on my Mi Box solely because of this dog shit youtube app. I couldn't even see my subscribed channels any longer as it wouldn't let me switch to a secondary youtube account that's linked to my Google account.

It's about time. They have some work to do in this update but at least the app will get updates faster now instead of one update a year.

The only problem I have is that I have 2 youthbe accounts attached to my Google account...and now I can't access the one I actually use for YouTube

Guess I am the only one that doesn't mind the update at all. In fact I kinda like it. One thing in particular.. It doesn't show the the seek bar when selecting a video! I always hated that the old app would show it for several seconds after picking a video.

Works perfectly fine on my ShieldTV, and actually made Youtube usable on my Nexus Player (it was a stuttery mess before).

Subscriptions feed is really no different. I don't care for how it shows the individual subscribed channels, but I have so many (400+) I never used that list or browsed through them that way anyways. 99.9% of my time is spent in the Subscriptions feed. If I want a specific channel, it is, and always has been, much easier to just search for it.

Wow not even a native app anymore. Google is just pathetic with Android TV support.

The shield TV still does 4k YouTube but no HDR.

The new version, like Netflix, doesn't respond to mouse input AT ALL make it extremely irritating to use. The previous version worked reasonably well even if it was a bit limited. Side loaded apps tend not to work with remote input so constantly toggling between the two is required on the MX3 airmouse remote. I'd just solved Netflix using the Kodi plugin too...

This is why you use alternate front ends to access their content. Problem solved.

Why exactly is this a bad thing? The Youtube app had some serious problems before, namely the forced autoplay and some frustrating UI problems like the related video overlay disappearing before the video titles could fully scroll by. I'm going to check the new UI out now, but at least it finally let me disable autoplay.

The only problem I have now is that the youtube app seems to have been removed from my tv's home page. :/
