Why did they change the YouTube app?

It looked great before and worked just fine, plus the "features" they added are not reliant on a new UI that looks like it belongs on one of those god forsaken "android boxes".... YouTube pls.

The new app seems like it's just a webview showing the HTML5 app. I imagine this was done to consolidate the code and reduce the amount of maintenance needed going forward. It's easier to maintain one app than two, after all.

I guess your question is more rhetorical than anything cause you'd have to ask Google to get the real answer. That said, my best guess is by adopting the same framework they use in every other leanback oriented app they are looking to being able to push updates and new features faster and easier.
