New YouTube app for Android TV sucks !

by KuwaitiRock

Latest YouTube for Android TV version (2.00.18) is complete disaster ! The old YouTube app is way better than the new one because: 1- I can change the video resolution

2- When I sign in with my account I can choose which channel I would like to sign in with.

3- The old YouTube UI looks better and perfect for TVs.

4- the old YouTube uses full qwarty keyboard while the new one uses the tiny keyboard that you can find in all YouTube apps for TVs and consoles.

I tried to install different versions of YouTube on my shield TV but I couldn't install any. IF ANYONE FINDS THE PERFECT VERSION PLEASE POST IT HERE OR DM

Chesskid1

go to apps, find youtube and uninstall updates.

Izacus

Guys, this is the link to provide feedback: https://www.youtube.com/androidtv_feedback

Make sure THEY know what kind of arse this new app is.

machin3mike

Looks like they updated back to 2013. Hated it instantly.

jakeroxs

It is really bad, sub list takes up full screen but gives less information then before. Like button is hidden in a menu. Just after 10 mins in the app.

hotweiss

I can't watch Videos in 4K any more!!!

Stammis

Updates like these just goes to show the people at Youtube/Android has no idea what they're doing... Or they don't put enough leash on their programmers.

Don't change what doesn't need fixing just because you're bored!

CuvisTheConqueror

I honestly like the new UI, but that's the only thing I like about it over the old app. It particularly drives me nuts that the new one doesn't support sub-accounts. WTF?

Mgamerz

God awful. It's completely worthless as I can't use my old YouTube account, only the stupid Google+ one they made years ago. I might as well use my smart TV YouTube app.

Can someone resign the last good update?

Gryphie

Now when you rewind or fast forward it pauses. So now you have to rewind or fast forward and then press the play button.

sonyfan01

For us who have Android tvs like Sony:

The worst is no 4k. No HDR.

It was promised by Sony that our tvs would have HDR support. How will this SITE send a message to the tv that's playing HDR content? It's just a browser. The tv won't get any messages from the YouTube thing.

They did this without even noticing they were hurting Sony in the process . LOL

rohar_

What the fuck. I can't sign into my "YouTube" account. Only google account which doesn't have my subscriptions.

Fucking awlful.

KuwaitiRock

The old YouTube for Android TV was the best UI google designed for YouTube compared to consoles and Apple TV4. If Google keeps adding features to the old design it will perfect place to watch videos on .

J3ST3Rx

Came here to add my voice of frustration. I'm on limited bandwidth internet and now I can't change the resolution. Thanks Google. wtf.

PS - the new UI is fugly and does not adhere to the material design language at all.

Serariron

That's why I have automatic updates disabled. Thankfully updating stuff manually is viable on something like Android TV where I only have a few apps installed.

But yeah, the new app sucks, just saw it. I still think one of the best youtube interfaces ever was the one made for the old Google TV, I still had the Sony NSZ google TV in use just for that until the App basically broke due to updates of youtube itself.

It sucks.

omair94

I use Bluetooth headphones with my Shield TV, and 8/10 times in the new app, I wont have audio. And when I do have audio, if I pause or seek, I lose it and have to restart the app to get it back.

vladoportos

Oh yes ! Come home tired and wanted just lay down and watch YouTube on my shield.. i turned it and just wtf like 20 min until I found uninstall all updates... who the f...k thought not giving me options to switch accounts binded to the same email was a good idea... the app worked fine before, dont fix something that is not broken !

skynet_watches_me_p

I have reverted back to 1.3.11 and am keeping the APK on my SD card in case it's needed again.

Once, an OTA comes out that forces an upgrade, I'll probably re-root and delete the youtube app from the system image and re-install 1.3.11

RastaSalami

There is only one word to describe this - disaster. For some reason they decided to use the Youtube TV url ( https://www.youtube.com/tv ) as an android tv app. This interface is used on other platforms like Xbox one and WDTV. Now I cannot watch 60fps videos as they stutter as this web page player does not use the accelerated gpu functions. I had to uninstall updates to get the old youtube app. I have submitted feedback on google play store and their youtube feedback form. Hope they come back to their senses and fix it back.

blondedre3000

Not only can I not choose my account, it doesn't even log into my default youtube account but some other random account. I couldn't even use it at all.

Hey maybe we could also make it so you can see video info and comments, or add a video to a playlist, or wow... maybe... just maybe... even go back to the previous video?!

staalvreter

What I hate the most is the new layout with the random stuff ive never watched... The old app had much better random pics @ main screen ive actually shown interest in or are my own channels. Now you dont really see that new stuff that you actually want to track...

mindsnare

I can't choose my normal Youtube account I can only choose my google account. All subscriptions gone. WTF.

Kevinjohn556

I just spent a half hour on the phone with YouTube tech support and they didn't know what I was talking about, let alone what an Nvidia Shield is. I after a half hour found this forum and saw to uninstall updates (which worked) and had to tell them how to do it.

PalebloodSky

The YouTube app on my Mi Box finally updated this week. I tend to agree with you and the new one is quite cluttered looking too. Not going to uninstall the update, but not thrilled with it. Google's Android TV support is very poor.

kitkatlow

yes this latest version sucks, big time!!!!!

go to play store, my apps, choose youtube, uninstall the update. now back to normal.

stoke1863

What a disaster this new update is. Design wise it looks so outdated almost like a 2012 version of YouTube. The videos are constantly stuttering now and also I can even use my YouTube channel account with all.my subscriptions.

Absolutely awful

pofcorn

On my Mi Box, 60 fps videos drop back to 30fps then back again every so often. Didn't notice it at first, but once I did it really bothered me so I uninstalled the update. I didn't mind the new UI though.

h0bz

The worst is the keyboard. Its not multilingual and it cant be controlled by a remote keyboard. So i cant search thai letters when searching youtube.

Also skipping forward in long videos takes forever.

Also not able to change resolution sucks.

Worst app 'upgrade' ever.

I think maybe the person responsible for it should go to jail...

bernardos70

Made even more inexplicable by the fact they updated the Google Play Music app, and it's still native, and it's still great. Get those devs on the YouTube app, please, ASAP.

y0utux

Is 2.02.08 working for you? They mention “Playback stability fixes, reduced jitter and resolved various 4K and A/V sync issues” in the release notes. I just installed it, and it seems to be able to play 4K video again without problems.

adityavarma9

I totally agree. Is there a way to revert it to the old version.

groac

no 4k youtube anymore with the new version...............

danuabs

Would love an in-app control for the backscreen brightness too, sony bravia doesn't give you that option in generic menu, app sears through my skull in the evening.

550c

The worst part for me is that the triggers on the shield controller no longer fast forward and rewind. And when you fast forward with the new app it pauses. Casting from my phone is now a better experience than the native app.

Madvillains

Shows the direction Google is now becoming. SMH.
