My thoughts on the Xiaomi Mi Box

by iwaskylester101

Hello everyone! I just bought a Mi Box and wanted to write a little appreciation post for it.

Before buying the Mi Box I went through a Chromecast, Fire TV, Raspberry Pi and Roku. I had a chromecast originally only to find out my TV has an overscan problem where it cuts the picture off and there's no setting to change it (Coby) but the picture is super nice so I wanted to keep it.

I switched to an Amazon Fire TV box and it was great because it had an overscan setting where you can adjust the screen but the Audio was going out through my TVs 2.5mm aux because that goes to my analog reciever and for some reason the TV just puts out a really awful white noise and low freq bass.

Soooooooo I bought a raspberry pi and put Kodi on and it was pretty nice except for the lack of streaming apps so I got the android TV itch and tried to install it on the Pi and I actually got it to boot but it ran pretty badly considering how buggy it was. The Pi is a nice device though, it just didnt work out with my overscanned TV. After I gave up on the Pi my cousin convinced me to get the Roku and I already hated it from the start with how they make you make a Roku account that you have to enter your Credit Card info in on. They just seemed like a corprate company but I guess everyone kinda is. The problem was it didnt have Audio out and there was no overscan setting :(

So I went to walmart to look for a Fire TV because I figured I could live with the audio but not the overscan and I saw the Mi Box for $65. I looked up a few reviews and people seemed to mostly accept it so I figured Ive tried everything why not give it a shot.

I LOVE IT! - This OS (could be the normal google TV OS not sure) has an overscan setting which was amazing! Then I came to realize that the back of the box does indeed have 2.5mm out! I was so pumped because my 2 problems were solved. The UI seems to run smooth and apps have no problem opening or running. You may be able to get a better running box but for the price range this thing is a crazy grab! I'm just excited I finally sound a box that solves my issues. Apparently some people were having issues with Netflix but it works so far for me. Also everyone is complaining about the 7 update but I don't mind too much just because of how this solved my personal issues lol. 10/10 would recommend.

I see you tried the Fire TV as well and keeping aside your overscan issues and audio, did you like Fire TV and would you take a FireTV assuming your problems were resolved ? Asking because I am using a fire stick for last 1.5 years but I am going to buy a Fire TV for my dad and brother overseas and Xiaomi Mi Box was also considered but I am just more comfortable with fire stick / fire tv and think they too will feel the same so I am going with it.

I am planning to personally get a Fire TV for myself but I can wait for the 3rd gen to come hopefully this year at least.

TIP - Edit the above and place a blank line between the end of old and the start of new sentences.

Makes readability a LOT easier.

Probably on your Fire TV you just needed to turn off Dolby Digital in the audio settings.

Does the YouTube app for this box freezes and stops for anyone else? I constantly have to restart the box for it to work again.

Nice post for mi box. I bought this one last Thursday, it cost $34. But the OS is customized deeply full of ads. I install the original Android TV OS by following some threads. It works perfect for me.

Seems like many of your problems could have been solved by simply purchasing a better TV.
