I have an HDHomeRun Connect and want to stream it to a future Android TV box purchase. I was told Android TV 7 would add features like PVR and DVR to the native Android TV experience. Mi Box is stuck on 6 though. It's anyone testing Android 7 on it and using the native TV app to PVR/DVR?
In my house I have a Shield TV (Android 7) and some Mi Boxes (Android 6, not beta testing.)
Regardless of what platform you are using you can install the HDHomeRun app and if you have signed up for their subscription PVR service you can record and view from the App itself.
Another option is to roll your own and use Kodi. I have NextPVR installed on a server and I can record and timeshift from Kodi. The only downside is you need to have a PC to run whatever PVR software you want to use ( there are a few options ) and you need to put some time and effort into the setup.
The other is Live TV app that google offers. Live TV is an easy to use app that gives you a guide. The new version of the app (Android 7) is where they added PVR and Timeshifting capability.
In Android 6 you add various apps as sources and then Live TV populates the guide. For example you can add Pluto TV to it. When you first use it you go to Settings and go to Channel Sources to setup apps to work with Live TV. Here's where the difference between Android 6 and Android 7 comes in to play. In Android 6 you use the HDHomeRun app as a source. In Android 7 you don't. In Android 6 you setup the HDHomeRun app then go to Live TV and add the channels as an app.
In Android 7 you don't need to install the HDHomeRun app. When you setup sources you get a Network TV Tuner option and you then scan your HDHomeRun natively. Live TV now takes care of all guide data and gives the ability to record and timeshift natively from the app.
The only downside is if you are paying for HDHomeRun services you are not going to have those recordings through the Live TV app. The upside is you could record/timeshift without paying for a subscription to HDHomeRun.
