Random Pop-up Ads Appearing at Random Times on Xiaomi Mi Box

by JustinThatGamerDude

Hey everyone,

I've been having a bit of an odd problem, which I think might have got fixed. However, I want to see what you redditors think could have caused it.

So I recently learned of the magic of APKs and how to install them onto my Xiaomi Mi Box and kinda went crazy. I found free versions of ES File Explorer Pro as well as MX Player Pro and I installed them with no problem through an APK I found online and Droid Buddy 2 respectivly. But when I went to play something for my daughter on the Disney Junior app, I all of a sudden got these random pop-up adds like you'd see in the free-to-play phone games and I knew that Disney Junior never did anything like that before. I figured it was nothing, figured they made some changes.

Things got really weird when I went into Netflix so that my wife and I could watch something. In the upper left-hand corner was a banner ad and I KNEW that nothing like that has EVER happened in Netflix before. So I figured it had to be some sort of app causing it. So I uninstalled Droid Buddy 2, ES File Explorer Pro, and MX Player Pro and put the free versions of the latter two apps back onto my Mi Box.

The ads seem to have gone away for the time being and I was wondering if anyone had this same problem before and could tell me what to lookout for. I figured that maybe it was since I pirated those two apps the random pop-ups were a way to tell me 'I dun goofed.' Also I was wondering for those who had Droid Buddy 2 if they had similar problems with these pop-ups. Any input and advice is welcome.

So you installed cracked versions of apps and got adware on your box? Yeah, that sounds about right.

ES is bad, uninstall that. The rest you have to uninstall with trial and error to see which are also causing pop ups.

Also note that cracked apps can be dangerous.

Agreed ES File Explorer is the worst App in the Playstore for Android TV devices. Nothing better than Adware, Bloatware & Spyware these days.

Use X-Plore App instead. Much easier to see what you are doing as well with X-Plore.

I only read as far as es file explorer and knew it was at least part of the problem if not all

You could also try Malwarebytes and see if it resolves your issue. I had the same issue and running that program fixed the never ending ads.

Also I like FX Explorer, it's a good alternative.
