Mibox for Sony X900E - should I?

by blck_lght

Hello all Bit of a pre-story: I live in China, so my situation might be a bit different from yours, but I hope you can still help me. I recently got a new Sony X900E tv, which comes with android tv. Everything works great, I can download some local streaming apps, the local equivalent of Netflix and what not. But I'm thinking if I should get a mibox. Will it give me anything that the tv itself can't? From what I see from description and comments it has a similar interface, can download the same apps, etc. So my question is, do I even need it? And another question: if I were to buy one, which one should I get? I'm looking at the available boxes and there are two different models both called Mibox 3. One is matte black, roundish, with a black remote (only available at resellers, not available on Xiaomi official account), the one that's also available on Amazon. Another one is what they call "Strong Edition" (pardon my loose translation) - a white roundish square one, doesn't look pretty at all, looks more like a router or something (this is the one available on the official account). Spec-wise they seem to be similar, except that the white one has two USB ports and the processor is [allegedly] six-core instead of quad-core.

The Android TV on your Sony is the same as what is on the Mi Box so I don't see the need for you to get a separate box.

If you still want to get a Mi Box, here is a good post about the differences between the various Xiaomi boxes: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/5zp9pi/the_various_model_numbers_of_xiaomis_collection/

Basically you want the International version (MDZ-16-AB) which is the matte black one you mentioned in your post. Not sure where you are in China, but I know you can get that version at the Xiaomi Mi Home store in Hong Kong.

In China, there are many versions of the Mi Box that run regular Android and have a "skin/theme/launcher" applied ("Xiaomi TV") to function more like an Android TV device. The Mi Box here in the USA runs the Android TV operating system which is different from regular touchscreen Android.

I don't see a point in getting any box that just runs regular Android. Android TV can sideload Android apps and regular Android doesn't have Google Cast.

I also don't see a reason to get an Android TV device to connect to an Android TV television unless you have complaints about performance (laggy UI) or want extra features (like NVIDIA's Shield TV with Gamestream).

What I already posted yesterday....

No DRM and HDCP on all those cheap Chinese Domestic consumption only Mi boxes labelled 3c, 3s, and 3 (white). So no 720/1080p/4K Android TV Netflix, HBO etc etc...

No Chromecasting certificates as well - so none of that. These cannot be added just by putting new Firmware on a device.

And even trying to add your own Firmware will be a right royal PITA. We have not even talked about updates yet....

Get a genuine MDZ-16-AB Mi Box if you want the real deal. Plenty of places selling them like Aliexpress in China / Hong Kong.

These comments are made recognizing you have an AndroidTV and that you want access to Chinese content inside PRC

All of the devices below will plug into your TVs HDMI port.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GET MDZ-16-AB!!!!!!! It does not have any Chinese oriented content and you will have same problem sideloading apps as on your TV

Of the Xiaomi products designed for the domestic market, the top-of-the line is mdz-18-aa, white model and very powerful, probably more future proof than the 2 black models RMB 399

Other model of interest would be mdz-19-aa or mibox 3s RMB 299

lower end mdz-16-aa mibox 3c is the cheapest RMB 249 Not recommended as it is 2.5 year old hardware

One common element for all these boxes is they include literally TONS of Chinese content that is fully licensed within PRC. When you leave confines of PRC you will have challenges using this content but for the next 3 years you will have more content that you can handle. If the sports options are skimpy, you can always get apps from Shafa Market or Mi app market. No doubt the PPTV app will run on these boxes.

3c and 3s incorporate a new UI with intelligent learning of your favorite type of shows.
