I'm a Nvidia Shield user and although I can notice that the quality is quite good on Netflix, how can I know for sure that it's streaming in 4k?

Netflix commissioned a series of diagnostic videos exactly for this purpose.
Search for "Test Patterns" and pick any of the 9 choices.
You will get real time info about resolution, bandwidth and color depth. Let it run for a few minutes to reach optimal levels. Turn the sound off!!!
On my shield I connected a keyboard and I press f4 which shows current video resolution.
On my receiver I can look at both the input and output resolution via the onscreen menu. Can you look at that?
When you go to play a show, it'll show "HD", or "4k" in the title menu, just before you hit play. HD is 1080.
Honestly, if you can't tell, then you are needlessly spending extra for a 4k netflix subscription/hardware.
