PSA: FLIRC broken with Nexus Player on 8.0 RTM

by pinkhalo1

With the final version of 8.0 (can't say about betas, never tested them) FLIRC does not work when you hit OK/Select on a blank text field - meaning the OSK never pops up - so you have no way to enter text for passwords or search/etc. I tried the Amazon Fire TV OK, Nvidia SHIELD OK or Keyboard Enter options in the FLIRC software - none of them work. They work for selecting things though. Just not popping up the OSK when hitting OK in a text field.

Edit: it doesn't even work with the native remote if the FLIRC is connected. The OSK will never pop up. You need to disconnect the FLIRC for it to work with the native remote again. This implies seeing as the FLIRC identifies itself as a keyboard to the Nexus Player, it just expects you to use the keyboard keys, so never will pop up the OSK with the FLIRC connected.

So really, it's that any keyboard-style remote (RF dongles that show up as a "keyboard") will be broken. WTF, Google?

I noticed this as well. It seems if it detects a USB keyboard(which is all the FLIRC dongle is) it doesn't show the on screen. Pain the ass.

Off topic, is official ota out or did you manually flash it?

Wow, this is disappointing news. I use a FLIRC with my Nexus Player which runs on Android 7.1.2 and may hold off on upgrading to Android 8.0 if this problem is not resolved.

This was a problem with some Bluetooth game controllers that showed up as keyboards. There's an app that fixes it, on the Play Store.

Does it have the new ui they teased for android tv? If so how is it?

speakxj7

yuck.

at least since you can unlock your bootloader you could probably go in and fix it.

Now that a proper release of Android 8.0 Oreo is available for the Nexus Player, can you give it a try and see if this bug still exists?
