My positive experience with android tv (mi box)

by slaucsap

I ordered a Mi Box from Aliexpress for my mum to watch netflix and downloaded tv shows and movies with subtitles, it works like a charm yada yada yada... but today I went to spend the day with my little cousin which is 5 years old and I installed a super nintendo emulator in the mi box and carried it in my hip pouch to my uncle's house.

The emulator with the xbox 360 controller worked seamessly! I didn't had to touch anything and we enjoyed a ton of games.

Then my little cousin told me how much he loved minecraft, so I went ahead and tried to download a patched minecraft apk in my uncle's laptop, then I installed and it worked inmediatly, very good frame rate and stuff, he was astonished and I ended borrowing him the mi box for the weekend.

I really think this device is top notch, it reeeally kicks the ass of a rasperri pi (for gaming) or a nes mini, AND it also works for netflix, youtube, chromecast for like $70....

maybe you already have a console, pc, smart tv, etc... but if you don't have a solution for this kind of light gaming and stuff, this is really a bargain and its awesome the little tinkering you have to do to get it ready for your little cousins and grandmas to operate them easily.

I hope android tv doesn't die, it's an amazing platform. also tumbs up to xiaomi.

I highly recomend the Snes9x EX+ app for the mibox + 360 controller tho, works perfectly.

You cant post that rubbish here:)

How DARE you mention Xiaomi in a positive light!!!

Everyone knows it never works with Netflix. Your mum must be sorely disappointed that it won't work...

And, last of all, this MiBox is not suited for gaming of any sort.

You must stop this blasphemy and immediately go out and replace it with Nvidia Shield. Just don't try to carry it in your pocket!!!

Oh, and did I forget.....never, ever expect any firmware updates

Glad you are having a blast with this little device. Keep us updated with any future insights.

I've just recently gotten fast 100Mbps Broadband.

Watched 4K Netflix (The Defenders) over the last few days and the Mi Box did not miss a beat. :-)

I do not even have a AC WiFi router - 5GHz N Band only (Apple Extreme)

Thanks for the idea, I have just installed SNES emu on my Android box and my 7 year old is having a blast :)

I'm blown away how great this thing is, haven't even tried emulators yet but I know I'll be pleased.

I can also relate to op, I bought the mibox a couple of months ago and it has been nothing but good times!

I recommend using retroarch since it works great on the box.

Same experience here. Been using it for a few weeks with zero issue. Running Kodi, Netflix, and Retroarch, all are running damn near flawlessly.

I have a Mi box and use it strictly for Kodi. However, I wanted to gift my brother an emulator box so he could play NES, SNES, Genesis, etc. I read up a bit and people suggested outfitting a Raspberry Pi with Retropie. I never even considered outfitting a Mi Box.

I guess my question is, is the Mi Box a better solution for emulators? The Raspberry Pi seems difficult to initially setup and doesn't appear too friendly to work with. It also seems difficult or unintuitive to load other things alongside Retropie, such as Kodi. Perhaps because of the lack of Android TV.

Is emulating on Mi Box as simple as downloading an app from the play store? Is getting other games as simple as downloading an apk and uploading via USB? Could you elaborate a bit more on how you get the most out of emulating on the Mi Box? I'd love to have a more user friendly experience for my brother than what seems a Retropie might offer.

I got one a while ago and loved it, gave it to my gf and got the shield. I like to be able to crank up the settings with it. AA and all the post effects. It's an awesome little streaming box have fun with it. For the price it's got a lot to offer. I am just a spec whore though.
