Has the Mi Box improved?

by sporez

I had a Mi box for a week or so back when it was first released and ended up going with a Shield instead because of the bugs that the Mi box suffered from. But now I find myself needing another streaming box for another TV for Plex/YouTube/Netflix and am wondering if the Mi box has received any updates that have improved it's performance?

I'm not sure what issues you had previously, but I use a MiBox as a secondary, and have no problems playing the typical streaming content. Also have the ShieldTv as a primary device. I've only had one update on the MiBox in the last 4 months or so, which didn't seem to change much for me.

If you are in the US, then give it a shot from WM, and if it still doesn't meet your requirements, it's an easy return.

I have no problems at all with the mibox and would buy a second if I'd need one more

The box works fine for me. For the price its hard to be beat. Id pick this up over the Fire TV box mainly for the interface, id prefer pure android tv over Amazons locked down interface.

WhatWasWhatAbout

I don't have any issues to speak of on mine. Runs at 4k 30hz just fine.

Not really.

I've got 2 issues with mine - but they are completely tollerable.

  1. The Android Remote App stops responding every other day or so. Have to reboot the MiBox to get it to connect again. 30 Second fix.

  2. The more annoying issue: If I adjust the MiBox volume (not the tv volume) the volume tends to go up and down in spikes. Louder for a couple seconds then slowly back down to what I set. Then louder, then slowly lowers. So I leave it at full volume and just adjust the volume on the TV.

All in all, for the price it is a good device. It could be better - but it is worth the money.

I have two that I use daily with Youtube, netflix and kodi and have no real issues to speak of. I don't do 4k if that makes any difference.

Mi Box works great. Kodi, Netflix, Vue, Live Channels, YouTube, etc works flawlessIy for me. Used a bunch of others for small month to year paid "trials" and never had technical issues.

GldRush98

I've yet to see any issues with it and it's our primary media consumption device.

I'd advise against buying. Endless small issues for me (despite 2 factory resets). Sometimes it won't wake up so I have to unplug it and plug back in. Casting is generally less reliable than on Chromecast plugged in to same tv. HBO playback artifacts that are pretty disruptive (never happens with Chromecast). Apps crash in the background with some regularity.

These problems are small and/or infrequent but together really diminish the experience

Dasbishop

Never really had an outstanding issues beyond the fact that often it would sleep and not wake up.

Mibox works fine for me. I use it for netflix, twitch, youtube, kodi (with emby backend and nextpvr backend for live tv), moonlight, HBO Go.

I also use the cast feature for my IT training stuff and podcasts from podcast addict on my phone.

I use a UGREEN USB ethernet adapter with 3 USB ports and I don't have any issues.

For the money, it's a great value. The Shield is not for everyone and we are talking about a huge price difference..

The dolby audio decoder seems to be broken, the 5.1 logo on Netflix should appear no matter what TV the device is connected to, because the Mi Box has SPDIF output, it should work just like an old WDTV and a 3rd generation Apple TV I used to have; some say even DTS is not working despite having it according to the specifications on the box and the website.

My MiBox runs perfectly, although I'm on the beta firmwares.

I use it almost exclusively for Plex which I've had no issues with.

It used to mess up some HEVC content but that was fixed for me ~6 months ago and have had no issues with Plex since.

eatemalive35

I can confirm that surround passthrough in the plex app was fixed in the last update.

The only problem I still have with it after 12 months is no auto refresh rate switching which is a deal breaker for me. I wouldnt buy another one until that is fixed.

I advise against buying any media player if you want 100% flawless reliable operations. That is Utopia dreamland thinking.

They will all have issues, yes even the NVIDIA Shield. You just have to work out if those ongoing issues will personally affect you.

I do not recommend any Android TV box if you want a reliable, optimised 4K Kodi box either. Those devices exist in AMLogic LibreELEC Kodi Krypton land.
