Is the Mi Box still good purchase?

by weinerschnitzelboy

I'm looking to getting an Android TV box but with such limited priced options, it looks like I'm going to get a Mi Box. However, it's almost a year old already, and I was wondering if I should just go get one or hope that Google partners with another OEM to bring a newer model out. Potentially around the announcement of the Pixel 2

Yes absolutely. Regardless of it getting updates, for the price it's an excellent AndroidTV device.

It's still a good deal for 70 dollars, but touting features in promotional materials and on the product packaging that would only be possible with an OS update, then never delivering that update pisses me off.

Mi box doesn't get updates often and they are still at Android os6. I just invested in a Nexus player the price has dropped and you can update it to the latest version of Android which is oreo. Also it should be noted that google is supposedly coming out with a new streaming box this fall but it has yet to be confirmed.

Yes, it is still a good purchase. A new Nexus/pixel box isn't even rumored.

I just bought one today and came to this sub. So far my first impressions are good, I connected my phone at initial setup and it's worked great so far. I had some remote pairing issues but once I rebooted it it seems to be fixed. I've had a VUDO has stopped working message come up twice now, but will probably uninstall that anyways.

Being a year or two old for a TV box doesn't mean anything. They're not phones or tablets and they tend to have much slower refresh cycles. There isn't exactly a lot of features that would actually require new hardware.

Depends what options you have while waiting for some unknown future device. If you're happy poking at your phone to drive your Chromecast, or your TV has a usable proprietary Netflix and that's all you want it for, no.

I've already pre-ordered the new Google "Unicorn" Android TV Box.

Apparently it will punch a hole through any other Android TV device on the market it is so powerful. Looks real nice from the pre pre pre released, leaked picture snapshots as well in glorious Pure White.

I cannot believe google will be selling it for $49.99 either. Slave labour in Google sweatshops must be real cheap these days ! !

I use it daily, some things piss me off but it's still a quality 4k streaming box when it feels like it. It's my daily driver, sometimes it needs a reboot, but I'd buy another if it broke.

We consider it one of the best: https://www.tvaddons.co/androidtv-kodi-boxes/
