Netflix 24p

by throwawayrelationshp

I'm really sorry if there's an easy to find answer to my question somewhere. But I tried. For hours.

What android TV device supports smooth 24p Netflix playback? (except for the Nvidia shield...)

This is really all I want. I watch 99% Netflix and sometimes Amazon Video (for which I could still use my PS4 if I get some device that doesn't support Amazon).

What I've learned so far:

  • the Nvidia shield is pretty much unrivaled and is supposed to work perfectly. I just consider 300 bucks way to much just to watch Netflix.
  • I had the Fire TV stick, but when switched to 24p output Netflix it stutters every few seconds
  • the Xiaomi Mi Box had a lot of problems early on, but it might have gotten better since?
  • there are some cheap S905X devices that can run Kodi. And Kodi apparently has a new Netflix plugin. Is it usable yet?

Thank you so much for your help!

If you care about 24p, you probably also care about HD. In which case, don't buy one of those shit tier s905x android boxes. They can't run Netflix in HD.

I would read this 26 page NVIDIA Shield owners thread VERY carefully before spending $200 trying to watch 24p Netflix:

Some TV's these days have Motion smoothing picture processing algorithms can produce nice smooth 24p Netflix @ 60Hz. The Mi Box and my Hisense TV combo definitely does this.

good thing shield is only 200 bucks ;)

I have Kodi 18 installed via Libreelec on a machine and have the Netflix plugin working. Its pretty neat. I do wish someone could make that plugin less Kodi like and more Netflix-esque so the experience would feel better, but if you are happy with the way Kodi does things it works.

What generation fire stick do you have?

It's an Android problem, and only Nvidia has worked around it. All others are waiting on Google to fix it at the OS level.

Well. So I pretty much still know the same as before. Half of the people are saying 24p Netflix works on the Shield and the Mi box, the other half says it doesn't. One of the top reviews on German Amazon specifically says it doesn't even work on the Shield. I really don't know what to do.

Just FYI: my last research into the mythical 24p Netflix output led me to believe the samsung ubd-k8500 would be able to do it; not sure if there's any truth to it though; and it's a pretty costly option nonetheless...

I ended up buying the Shield of course. Love it and it plays 24p fine. Still feel bad about spending so much money though.

Google might introduce a new box this year. Wait for that. New FireTV this October might also be worth waiting for.
