My shield isn't seeing it, and I keep reading that you need to get the firmware. Now I see that the firmware can only be gotten on Windows 10 or an Xbox One. So uh. Any ideas? That just seems insane.

See if someone you know has a w10 pc. You need to update it through the Xbox accessories app to use it on the shield
To be fair most people buy the controllers to use them what their originally intended for, so I wouldn't call it insane. Good luck though!
Hope a friend can help you out?
Yeah that's how they do it on the XBox, the device gets updated through the system. Personally I'd try to take it somewhere that sells XBox ones (local Microsoft store? Best Buy?) and see if I could update it that way.
Question: does the remote have some heft to it, or does it feel like cheap lightweight plastic? Let me know if you're able to get it working, been looking at getting a new remote and this one is on my list.
I'm using on with my shield tv and did not do a firmware update. I'm connecting using Bluetooth. The first time pairing it I needed to have the remote very close to the shield. Since then it's been able to pair up to 8-10ft away.
The buttons don't map the same for some games as the shield controller but that could be due to me not doing the update.
Before this controller I tried a Logitech controller using wireless and I could not get that to work to for me.
You can download a free evaluation copy of Windows 10 from Microsoft. Install it on a VM and update your firmware that way. That's what I did before I had an Xbox one. I run Linux.
