My dad has a Sony Bravia TV and he's been trying to install apk apps to stream Hong Kong / Taiwanese shows and movies. He wasn't able to open the apps he installed. Do I need to buy a dedicated android box? Thanks

I use Mx Explorer to navigate to a NAS, install the apk, then use Sideload Launcher to access the actual app once its installed. Seems to be the only way to do it, unfortunately. It does work, though.
The problem is that the Android TV launcher does not list sideloaded apps on the home page. Look for to the app Sideload Launcher in the app store. It does show up on the home page and gives easy access to your sideloaded apps. I use it every day.
It's like Ghostbusters - don't cross the streams.
A small fraction of tablet Android Apps will work on Android TV.
Those that do work may display in landscape mode, when you fix that with another app, you then find the App scaling all wrong - plus you also need an Air Mouse.
At that point just give up and buy a dirt cheap Nougat 7.1.1 - AMLogic S912 box, that can have decent bug fixed alternate Firmware installed into it. (do a pre purchase check).
Do NOT buy a Marshmallow S912 device - that combo really is buggy.
Such Firmware will be found over on the Freaktab forums.
You have to load them onto a USB drive, then use something like ES Explorer to access and launch the APK. You will also have to have a separate launcher to show you the app for the icon, because the standard home screen only shows TV-enabled apps. Your dad would have to go to the launcher from the home screen, then navigate to the sideloaded app.
