I was told by a few people that android tv allows you to watch hundreds of shows for free but I'm not sure which one is the best box to buy.
Is it just a box that puts android operating programs on your tv? I'm not sure how it works. I don't want to buy one and find out its not meant to be a cable replacement.

I have a ps4 and an lg tv that already has youtube netflix, Google play and crave. Is it worth it to get a an android box?
You can use it with something like Kodi to stream TV shows and movies (illegally). A quick google search should be enough to figure out how to set it up. I haven't done it myself but a friend did it and said it was fairly straightforward.
If you are just using netflix, youtube, etc, then it isn't worth it since you can already do that.
Edit: To answer your other question, ya it is a way to get a TV version of the android operating system onto your TV.
For Kodi (legal streaming... But is able to the not so legal streaming) is what you are looking for.
The only AndroidTV boxes are Mi Box and Shield (Nexus too, but technically discontinued). FireTV is based on Android but with a Prime-centic UI, so it can have Kodi sideloaded to it.
My suggestion would be the Mi Box (ordered right from their website). If you go to the US than you can get it from Walmart. Only buy the model MDZ-16-AB. That's the international version.
Most "Android Boxes" are not AndroidTV . Most are cheap boxes with Android phone OS on it. That OS isn't made for TV use.
