With the many users dissuaded by Apple's pricey 4K HDR TV box and Amazon's Alexa-centric 4K HDR box, Google has an opportunity to jumpstart the Android TV platform if they introduce a 4K HDR player priced from $99.99-129.99.

I don't know if you guys have been reading the other subreddits but it looks like there's a major opportunity here for Android TV to finally become a major player in the streaming box market.

  • Apple's 4K HDR box is $179 and up. For that, you might as well get an Nvidia Shield and most people won't pay that much.

  • The early leaks surrounding the next FireTV have been met with scorn. If there's actually microphones, an LED bar and a speaker on the next FireTV, well, you're spending money on Alexa equipment rather than a better chipset, better Bluetooth, Gigabit ethernet, or Dolby Vision. And there's people who consider Alexa to be spyware.

If Google does the right thing and introduces a box that:

  • Has a serious enough SOC to run 4K60fps + HDR and any run every app smoothly for years to come.

  • Has things like Gigabit ethernet, updated Bluetooth, Dolby Vision, and a nicer remote.

  • Does NOT have Google Home equipment built-in.

  • Is priced from $99.99-129.99 to undercut Apple and be competitive with FireTV Roku 4K HDR players.

Then this will be the year that Android TV is no longer a minor player in the Western streaming box market.

Let's let Google know this is what we want. Or tell me if you need more.

So a Nvidia Shield without the gaming stuff.

Google has an opportunity to jumpstart the Android TV platform

I know its been a month since your last thread but Android TV still doesn't need a jump start

there's a major opportunity here for Android TV to finally become a major player in the streaming box market.

Why are you so convinced that this is Google's intent with the platform?

Isn't it possible that "Android TV" is maybe not the vehicle they intend to use to compete in the heavily saturated streaming device arena where they are already competing formidably (re: Chromecast).

Then this will be the year that Android TV is no longer a minor player in the Western streaming box market.

Again, maybe the Western streaming box market isn't their target audience?

I agree , I also will go a step further and say that if Android wants market control then they need to create their own products and go head to head with apple. I love my pixel and left iPhone for it with no regrets.

Chromecast ultra does 4k hdr and I think at 60fps although only YouTube would require that

I don't think a lack of good hardware is the issue here. The Shield TV is still a far more functional box compared to the Apple TV 4K.

The best feature of the Apple TV 4K is the discounted 4K content through iTunes.

Why would I choose a Shield TV over Apple TV if they are roughly the same price? I don't understand why you would say that is automatic. If anything, Google's opportunity to dominate this market is closer to being lost than ever.
