I think this is much bigger news than Apple finally acknowledging that 4k is a thing.
Long overdue. Makes total sense.
having had an androidTV device for over a year now (and dozens of android phones and half dozen tablets), I can already see the same problem that other android devices experience: hardware ages badly and system updates become trivial. Android has always had a hard time with a lifecycle longer than two years. I really am starting to doubt how well this will work for systems that are expected to work 5+ years at a time. The only things that I've seen "last" are the nexus player and the Shield, otherwise android apps leave mediocre hardware strugging to perform well in a couple years, and I doubt we'll see top of the line hardware in these boxes to start with.
Sweet, another Android device that never gets updated. I'll stick with my Shield and lack of cable.
I'm about ready to replace my Mi Box.
This was all the buzz (
example article from the period
) when Google acquired Motorola back in 2011 but didn't really go anywhere.
Hopefully this being a press release from a manufacturer means we'll actually see these types of boxes. Earlier discussion was all speculation.
Did I miss something ?
Android TV is already running on a bunch of Set Top Boxes worldwide:
And that is an 8 month old list...there is a more up to date one floating around somewhere...
Where I'm living the biggest Cable / Sat streaming company in the country will be launching a Android TV Technicolor Skipper set top box / DVR I believe before the end of the year. If the Technicolor Skipper is as half decent as Technicolor's modems it should be a competant ATV device.

Yeah as much as I want to say this is a good idea... It's not. I'm trying to imagine using a Mi Box for 8 years (I ditched it after 11 months). Nobody updates their hardware nor software.
Good idea, just a bad execution.
The software won't be updated after 3 months, and the only time you'll be able to upgrade is if you get a new box - costing you more money.
Cool more Android platforms to not be supported.
Yeah dont trust that cable companies are going to be doing anything good with it. Probably doing it so they can collect more data on people and what they watch.
Lets hope this encourages El Goog to give a little more attention to the ecosystem.
