Sorting movies by release date in SPMC/Kodi?

by callsignapollo

Can this be done? I know this can be done by year - but since day/month is not honoured, it's not what I'm looking for. Currently using 'date added' but this seems to go off the "modified date" of the file itself.

Not yet. The Kodi database only records year for release dates. There was some discussion about this and an attempt to fix it, a few years ago. I guess it didn't bare fruit.

I believe kodi doesn't support it at the moment because what's the release date? Presumably, people would want the release date that it released in their country, since that can be different. But then should it be release date in theaters? Blu-ray? Digital download? And if they picked one, there are definitely users who would want to use the other... As well as just finding a good source for this information. It opens up some potential issues.

That said, themoviedb does provide the USA theatrical release date... And I would probably just use that.

It is possible, I have my movies sorted by "date" and it's actually sorted by release date, so what you have to do is this:

  1. Open Kodi

  2. Click on "Movies", don't move to the right, just click on the first option and it will show all the movies you have

  3. Click to the left and you will see a menu

  4. Click on the second option "sort by", then select "year"

  5. To make sure it worked, go to any movie and open it or try to select "show information", at the right of the movie description you will see the release date, compare that date with another movie to the left or right of the one you selected, you will see they are organized by the older first and the newest at the end of the list, currently you can't turn the list the opposite.

Plex can do that.
