Problems hiding leanback launcher and using SPMC as home menu

by eightbitrob

Hi All,

Wondering if anyone else had this issue. As the title states I'm having issues trying to change my default home menu to SPMC. I've been able to do this before several times and never had a problem. I used this guide.

Long story short I screwed up something and had to do a factory reset and now for the life of me I can't get the leanback launcher hidden again. Everytime I run the "adb shell pm hide com.google.android.leanbacklauncher" command I get the error Error: java.lang.SecurityException: Neither user 2000 nor current process has android.permission.MANAGE_USERS.

I've never had a problem in the past getting this to work. Any suggestions?

I'm on a Shield TV (2015) non-rooted

The only way I was able to have it lunch to and return to SMPC with the home button was to root and remove the leanback launcher. GL!

If I recall correctly the ability to hide the default launcher was removed in an update to some component for security reasons. It might be possible to hijack the go home option with something like Tasker, don't know what the recipe would be though. Something like "If this activity of this app is invoked, launch this app" maybe?

You need to disable the leanback launcher while having the launcher version of SPMC installed. Then Android will ask if you want to set SPMC as the launcher the next time you press the home button.
