[MiBox] Stuttering on most videos

by hydraSlav

My MiBox was working fine since I've bought it, however for the last month or so, I've noticed a lot of stuttering (not all the time, but in certain places)

This happens on both, YouTube videos with the native app, and Kodi content, whether local from NAS (home videos) or online (like Food Network app).

With the YouTube stats window , I can see a lot "Dropped Frames" that seem to increase after each stuttering occurrence.

With the Kodi info window, I can see a lot of "dropped" frames in the stats too.

It's not network bandwidth: Kodi buffer is full with several dozen megs to spare, and YouTube buffer health also shows dozens of seconds to spare. Besides, it also happens on local NAS content, and I have both the MiBox and the NAS on ethernet connection.

It's the same content that I used to watch before... so seems like a month or so ago, something broke in MiBox decoder?

I've had the same problem. I did a factory reset a few days ago and haven't seen the issue since. I've not used it much since the reset, but I used to see stuttering in every video.

Are you running 4K? I had overheating issues which caused the same behavior.

Manually select the output Resolution as 4k@60Hz or 1080p@60Hz. Remove it from Auto. I used to have stuttering in UI as well as few videos when it was set as Auto and it would select "smpe 4k@60Hz" if I recall. (I do not have the MiBox anymore so cannot look into the settings but you can give a try). It may be specific to the VIZIO Tv I was using but you may try few changes from video resolution and see if it works.

Did you ever fix this? It's happening to me even with 720p content and after a factory reset.

However a fire stick has no issue with any of these problems. I really wanted to like this mi box

What is the refresh rate of the TV that you have your Mi Box outputting to?

Youtube can have all sorts of Framerates with its video content. There are a bunch of different framerates used.

23.976, 24, 25, 30, 50, and 60fps

Youtube is NEVER going to be 100% smooth when you have a Android settings screen resolution set to 1080p60hz.

You would need Youtube to implement TV dynamic refresh rate switching based on the fps of the source video - to fix all this video Sync. Like the NVIDIA Shield does when using the Kodi App.

Turn on your TV's motion smoothing / interpolation to try and hide whatever is upsetting you.

You need to buy a NVIDIA Shield or LibreELEC Kodi Krypton box and use the Youtube Addon in that if you want smooth video playback ALL the time. Both of theses devices implement Kodi dynamic refresh rate switching.

Disabling OK Google in the Google App should fix the video playback issue. It did for me.
