He describes it as an Android Tv.. but then says it's kind of not. Could someone explain this to an idiot like me? Lol. Many thanks. :)
I kinda think that this type of Android TV -- which has a UI/UX customized for particular pay TV providers, with the hardware sold or rented by the provider as opposed to available at retail -- may become the main way that Android TV is eventually used by the public, as opposed to being in retail streaming devices like the Nvidia Shield TV or in Sony TVs. Looks like AT&T has (or had) plans to offer a Technicolor-built customized Android TV box for their DirecTV Now service, kinda like Sling TV offers with their AirTV box. Having the box automatically boot up into their app's UI, with a remote custom designed for it, would make the experience that much more like a traditional cable service and more user-friendly for many folks, especially older generations.
Personally, I think this is great. If my cable provider offered these as their STB solution, it would be an optimal solution to have one box in each room (that ill have anyway) that will do Kodi, Netflix, and maybe? hopefully? Amazon. I dont want to buy boxes for every room to do netflix and kodi on top of the STBs if i dont have to. Unfortunately, with Cox doing their Contour line (which is Comcast X1) Im not really sure they'd dump Contour for Android TV. One could hope though.
Yes I'm going to run out and buy an android box from the same company that makes the shittiest cable operator equipment that barely works. I'll be lining right up.
