Is there any way to delete files on external drives using the VLC app? When I’ve watched an episode from a series, I’d like to remove it immediately from the hard drive.

You can delete in Archos Media Player.
The only way I've been able to manipulate files on my external HDD was by installing total commander and using a plug-in, separate app, to allow the ability to manipulate with the NTFS file system. I have too much stuff on the drive to be able to reformat it into an Android friendly filesystem so this is my only way. It's a pain in the butt but it lets me do what I need to.
I thought that all I needed to do was update my mibox to nougat but by doing so, with the beta build, I found out that I was mistaken. So I'm stuck on this beta build and cannot go back to official apparently until they release an official nougat build. It was after this that I found the total commander app and a plug-in for it that I was able to finally delete things. Good luck!
Not with VLC.
You can enable edit/delete functionality within Kodi's settings tho.
You can access the HDD with a file explorer to delete files, as well.
