My external drive seems to never stops spinning, even when the TV (XE90) has been sleeping for hours. This can't be good for the HDD, right?
I used to own a non-android Sony tv, where the external drive wound down after a while.

It's not that bad for the HDD to be spinning actually. HDDs are designed for doing that essentially. The most stressful part is actually the spinning-up/spinning-down process. So I'd not give much thought to the HDD being on all the time. Just keep in mind that, it being an external drive, moving a spinning HDD can be harmful.
Is the TV powered off or in standby mode?
