And make sure you buddy understands the difference between Android TV and the regular mobile/tablet/touchscreen Android OS.
You cannot just go installing all sorts of Android OS Apps on Android TV boxes like the Mi Box and the Shield.
They even have seperate Playstores.
Tell your buddy to stop looking at those Android "tv" boxes on Amazon. If they're plastering their specs all over the place and/or touting free movies/tv, it's a shit box and should be avoided.
There is such a thing as too good to be true.
Well we only discuss actual Android TV devices in here. We don't recommend Android boxes.
A great one is the Mi Box at $69. Fire Box is great too if you don't mind the UI. Nexus is discontinued but cheap and has Oreo.
At $180 or more the Shield is a waste of money if your friend is only interested in streaming. If gaming and even Plex is important than it's worth it.
There's only one under $100 and that's the MiBox. You can get the SHIELD for $180 now though if you're willing to skip the gamepad.
