Google Play Music and Assistant

by katmaipinnacles

I can't seem to get Assistant to work with Google Play Music. I'd like to know if anyone else is having issues.

For instance, if I say "Ok google, radiohead", I get youtube results for Radiohead. If I say "Ok google, play radiohead", it plays a radiohead youtube result. If I say "ok google, play radiohead using google play music", it fails.

What am I doing wrong?

Ran into this problem on my Nvidia Shield when doing the Android 6 upgrade. I had to wipe cache and data for Play Music, Google Play Services, then log out of my Google account and back in, then reboot. After that I could access GPM using Assistant perfectly.

Did you go into the Google Home app on your phone and set your music preference to Google music?

Not working with Spotify for me

I can't get it to open a specific app. Just related YouTube videos for every result.

So, I have it partially working now. I'm able to say "Use Google Play Music to play Radiohead", and the shield tv will open google play music and play radiohead. This works for Albums or Songs as well. "Ok Google, use Google Play Music to play 'Good news for people who love bad news'.

I still feel like something is wrong though, because I would expect "Ok Google, radiohead" to show results from GPM, not just YouTube.

I think this is related to the fact that GPM will revert to "not searchable" every time you try some command that would result in GPM results.

So, if I don't have GPM, Spotify or Netflix, is there any use at all for Assistant worth buying a (third) controller for? In Canada, so none of the other services are here.

General point about using assistant: I've found that it best responds when you treat it more like real assistant instead of a search engine.

I set my default music player to Google Music in the Google Assistant settings. Now when I tell my TV to play music on Google Music it will Chromecast the music to itself... So, I guess it kinda does work, it just doesn't use the Android TV app...
