Did you guys felt betrayed because Google didn't announced any Android TV devices in their Pixel Even ?

by kawshik201

It seems like Google is making less and less Android oriented devices and more devices related to Google Assistant. There is no Android Wear, TV or Auto devices announced. While Apple, Roku , Amazon all announced new TV deices recently Google announced nothing ! They should have announced a new Pixel Player.

Some may argue 3rd Parties are making Android TV devices so Google doesn't needs to but 3rd parties also makes Chromebook, Android Phones even Google Assistant Speakers. So if Google can make those devices even though they have 3rd Party alternatives they should make Android TV's also.

Betrayed? No, because we knew they didn't have anything in the Android TV world to show to us today.

I would like a device that lives somewhere between the Mi Box and Shield TV in terms of capability and cost but there are no leaks or information online to suggest one is in development.

murga

They ran out of grey fabric for Android TV.

Betrayed? Come on, hyperbole much?

If Google made a new "nexus" style device with updated hardware and able to grab the latest version of Android TV, it would effectively kill the competition except for maybe the shield. It would also make it so no one would want to make a new box because it would always be behind software wise for this new device.

The reason google phones are not dominating the market right now is because Samsung and LG make phones with a lot more power so people don't mind not having the latest version of the software. That's why the shield would still sell but nothing else would.

Not at all. Android TV is in a coma. Cable boxes and Nvidia will be the only sources of hardware going forward. There will be no Pixel Player, Nexus player only existed as a reference device to show what the platform was about, now that people know that, it is no longer necessary.

I don't understand why you would feel this way. There was no indication this was going to happen. No rumors, no leaks, no nothing.

If you want to stop feeling this way, look at the news instead of assuming something is going to happen just because you feel it might happen.

I didn't really expect anything about Android TV today. Increasingly, Google is about Google Assistant/AI/machine learning. Heard lots of references to that in today's event but I'm not sure I even heard the word Android once. (Maybe in reference to Oreo on the Pixel 2?) Even when talking about apps on the Chromebook Pixel, they talked about compatibility with "smartphone apps" from "the Google Play Store" but didn't say "It can run Android apps." Make of that what you will. Seems like Google is deprecating Android as a consumer-facing brand they associate with but still using Android as a brand when communicating with the developer/techie community.

Very betrayed. I even sent them a "DMPD'd" text

chowder007

Not really. Though i really feel like they have no intentions on coming out with another ATV. I think they intend on letting the current ones die off.

I honestly had assumed the Nexus Player line was EOL already. Mine have never worked well and I always assumed it was just Android TV's fault. But then I got an nVidia Shield and everything runs great on it so clearly the software is fine it's just Google's hardware wasn't up to it. And they don't seem particularly interested in updating it.

nextapp

Android TV development and support from Google I/E any new hardware or software development went out the window burnt to the ground and went into smokes when Google killed off the Nexus line and went with pixel with no more development hardware it's dead in the water

Yes, very much so. And for those of you who are going to remind me that there's Shield for that purpose, I say this:

I own Shield and it is an excellent device. However, I can only afford to buy it for ONE of my TV and for families with multiople secondary tvs in the house, a cheaper solution was badly needed to complete with various Sticks, and streamers that all sell between 60-100.

I switched over to the Echo/Fire TV ecosystem in the last month because of this exact issue. Google home does a lot of things better than Echo, and I own an Android phone (since the beginning of time) but the TV is the center of my home. Google has just let it coast and does not have a real interest here. I don't want a Chromecast and control everything on my phone. I want to look at it on the TV, and so do most other people. I want a company that I know will be committed to devices and services for the next few years. Google has lost my trust by killing off or neglecting so many services, apps, and devices. It was cool to watch it all today, and I still get excited at the possibilities, but I just don't trust they'll have the strategy or attention span to see things through.

Roseysdaddy

Naw. But I can tell you I will never buy a device xiaomi or whatever the hell their company is called. Not a phone, not a Fitbit, nothing. Fuck those guys.
