Only stereo through Kodi app.

Dolby Digital Plus is not compatible with optical audio, it works ONLY with HDMI, optical audio ONLY supports standard Dolby Digital and DTS core.
What you need to do to get 5.1 out of Kodi is:
go to settings -> sounds -> digital sounds and select "auto detection" or "SPDIF"
make sure kodi is setup to passthrough audio, go to settings, system settings - > sound -> audio passthrough section and select the options according to the amplifier/receiver you have the Mi Box connected:
a) if the amplifier/receiver ONLY supports Dolby Digital then select option 1, 2 and 3.
b) if your receiver supports Dolby Digital and DTS then select option 1, 2, 3 and 5.
The audio will be played back directly or converted, depending on the audio codec of the movie, so if you selected option 3 this will happen:
If the audio codec is standard Dolby Digital, then it will pass through directly to the receiver.
If the audio codec is Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Atmos, then they will be converted to standard Dolby Digital. If you don't select option 3, then they will be downmixed to stereo.
If the audio codec is DTS in all its available formats, the DTS core will be pass through directly to your home theater if you selected option 5, otherwise the core will be converted to standard Dolby Digital. If you don't select option 3, then the core will be downmixed to stereo.
If you get to connect the device directly to an AV receiver by HDMI or a TV with Dolby Digital Plus support by HDMI in the future, you have to select option 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 for AV receivers and options 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 for the TV (option 3 is necessary to convert Dolby TrueHD into standard Dolby Digital because no TVs support that codec currently, unlike DTS-HD master audio, where the core will be reproduced directly, so no conversion is necessary).

Switch to SPMC
He handles digital audit much better than the official Kodi
