Shield TV: have they fixed the remote? (2017)

by gsparx

I bought a shield TV but ended up returning it because the remote was absolutely awful (lagging after picking it up, sometimes taking up to 5 seconds to finally register clicks which is inexcusable in my opinion).

Well my ROKU is finally on its last legs and I need a new streaming device. Is the remote any better after software updates?

I'm considering getting a PROBOX remote anyway so it might not matter but I'm curious if anyone can speak to the quality of the remote now.

The first click takes a second but it still goes through for me.

I still have the problem that it takes 20 seconds for the remote to start working after I turn the box on from sleep.

The remote is off normally to save battery. Takes a few seconds to power on after first touch.

I have a gen 1 remote and they did fix my most annoying gripe: I can disable the pause and volume fuctions with the latest firmware

Note that probox says on their site :

Note: For compatible Android TV Boxes we have tested with most Android TV Boxes based on Amlogic / Rockchip / Hisilicon / AllWinner. But it cannot support for Nvidia Shield .

Most of the lag issues I had (aside from waking the remote from sleep), were actually caused by the batteries being low. Swapped the CR2032 cells with fresh ones and haven't had an issue since.

Mine takes a while to register clicks sometimes, so I guess not. It's the only thing that genuinely annoys me about the box, though.

I had remote issues initially but they were resolved by moving my Shield TV's away from other electronics and keeping them outside of glass cabinets. It's mostly a bluetooth interference problem.

I have never noticed that with mine, but I mainly Harmony anyways. Consider a flirc as another option as well.

I use my TV remote (hdmi cec). No issues. The shield controller and remote sometimes takes a second to wake up, but I usually don't even use them.

Remote doesn't have any of the problems that you describe but it is super easy to touch the volume slider without meaning to. Also, my TV's remote works fine with it, so I don't have to use the included remote. Over all, I've been absolutely loving the shield tv. Especially the gaming and the fact that I can watch TV with my Bluetooth headphones.

It's still a bit flaky but better after the last update. Can still occasionally have to wait a few seconds to register the first click.
