Shield TV doesn't wake up completely from deep sleep

by lurkus85

I've a Shield TV (the pre-2017 one) and love it. Haven't used it in a while, but now after several months it became our primary player in the living room, so it just got the newest update and is running on another TV now. The Shield is configured to use HDMI CEC to control the TV on/off. Since then, it appears to have trouble "waking up". When I put it in sleep mode, and wake it up a little later (e.g. 1 hour), all is good: It wakes up normally, switches the TV on and I see the Shield UI.

But when I let it sleep longer (e.g. overnight) and try to wake it up: The TV switches on, so obviously the Shield wakes up and sends the HDMI CEC command; but I don't get video signal on the TV from the Shield. Only resolution is to pull the plug and restart it.

  • Has anybody else experienced that issue?
  • I would love to simply disable that "deep sleep" which apparently gets triggered when you're for an extended time in sleep mode. Is this possible somehow?

Thanks!

what TV are you using it on?

If a vizio, its a known problem (with no fix in sight). It has to do with the HDMI handshake and the only fix, if it doesnt turn on, is to either pull and replug the shield, or create a macro with harmony to sleep and wake the shield again

What are you using to turn the shield on?

A work around I found was casting YouTube to wake it up.

Sounds like something weird is going on with the HDMI handshake upon wake. Maybe try a different method of simultaneously waking both units up? Turn off HDMI-CEC and invest in a Harmony remote? Much more reliable.

I have cec issues with the latest update. I've had my 2015 shield tv since release. I HDMI cec would never work properly with my crappy Aldi bauhn TV. It would drop the handshaking or something so the TV would lose the link.

The shield update prior to the latest one actually fixed all my cec issues. It was glorious.

But it seems the latest update has broken cec again for those of us with dodgy tv's dammit Nvidia.

While I'm here, the stock controller has become a total pos. It always drops the connection and can't even re-connect. This has been happening since about 4 updates ago.
