Really impressed with Google Assistant on Sheild

I've never really used the voice functionality on my Sheild, mostly because I found it very limited for tasks besides opening apps and looking up movies. Also, for some reason it had frequent problems recognizing my voice. The new Google Assistant update really fixed and added so many features. One of my favorite features has to be the ability to open a specific show on an app using only my voice, for example when I want to watch The Office I just say "Open Netflix and play The Office" and it quickly resumes my last episode. It's so convenient and intuitive. They also kept the ability to talk to extensions such as Akinator, which I was pleasantly surprised to see and I had a lot of fun with it and others such as Trump Caster. Voice recognition also seemed to greatly improve in this update. Overall I'm really impressed with the functionality and integration Google/Nvidia was able to achieve with this update and it was definitely worth the wait imo.

Plex needs to step their game up. 98% of what I watch on the shield is my own library. I would kill to be able to say "Hey Google, turn on the shield and play Paw Patrol in Plex" to shut my kids up.

I agree, I'm a big fan of the Assistant. I just wish they either released the Spot now or allowed a Google Home to act as a Spot.

I liked it the 4minutes it worked on my Shield. Now that it does not, not so much.

I just want to use the Google Home as a media controller for my Shield TV. If, or when this happens, I'll be in heaven.

That's all that's missing. Having to activate the Assistant via the remote is just useless for me, especially since I lose the remote all the time.

On a brighter note, I use the Google Home to turn my TV on or off now.

It's impressive I can control my Google Home with my SHIELD. Makes you wonder what sort of integration will come next.

I have two questions...

  1. Does this work with the remote? I can only seem to get it to work with the controller.

  2. If I purchase the SmartThings dongle (once it's released) would this allow me to use Google Assistant from the Shield to control devices connected to SmartThings?

I don't think I have it enabled. How can I check if it is present on my Shield (1st gen)? I'm also in Italy, so maybe they just hide it if the Assistant is not ready for your language.

i guess if its supported in your region. I found it a step back from regular search. Then again, so was the YouTube update. It feels like Google is abandoning Android TV (if it ever invested much)
