I wonder if there's any build where 4k60p doesn't heavily stutter (youtube and kodi)
Is it just 4K60fps or all 60fps videos? It used to stutter for me on any 60fps video before. I now have a combination of nougat beta 1028 and the newest YouTube app version 2.01.04 and it plays 1440p60fps smoothly.
It won't go to 4K60 for some reason, I think
YouTube underestimates the connection speed
. I have a pretty solid 250Mbps and the majority of those dropped frames are at the very start of playing.
The Mi Box hardware will never do 4K @ 60fps in x264, VP9 or x265 without dropping an unacceptable amount of frames. It wasn't designed to do any better than 4K @ 30fps. To Xiaomi's credit, if you look at official product stats or promotional materials they are somewhat careful to specify supported video playback modes are limited to 4K @ 30fps, even if the UI can do 4K @ 60fps with acceptable animation frame rates and performance in sub 4K/60fps video modes while in 4K @ 60fps resolution.
I personally don't use 4K @ 60fps for the UI because I notice that free RAM becomes so low that apps I leave will always refresh when I return to them, and performance is occasionally lower in general within apps because of it.
It's unfortunate in comparison that the SOCs in 200 dollar smartphones can now bang out 4K @ 60fps without breaking a sweat, but then again the Mi Box is only 70 dollars and has been on the market for a year already.
Used to stutter for me with the first leaked Nougat update but since this latest one (which breaks YouTube) 4K60 has been perfect for me. The UI is smooth and Plex/Netflix/Stan all play standard 4K content without a problem. Obviously I haven't tried YouTube and 4K 60fps content since it's broken but I don't use YouTube on the Mi Box anyway and Kodi I'm not sure either but if you're using Plex or Netflix it should be fine.
Do not even attempt 4K @ 60Hz Kodi HEVC playback on the Mi Box if the source video is High Bitrate 4K and includes encoded HD Audio.
That will simply overwhelm any Mi Box network connectivity, even if you use a USB to Ethernet adapter. Complete waste of time.
If Xiaomi wanted users to view such content they would have released the Mi Box with a built in Ethernet port period.
The $69 Mi Box is designed to be a low bitrate 4K Netflix / YouTube - HEVC / VP9 steaming platform. That is the Max limit of its capabilities.
The AMLogic S905X Chipset that is in the Mi Box easily hardware decodes high bitrate 4K HEVC video with HD Audio when using LibreELEC Kodi Krypton with bitrates in excess of UHD Blurays.
As already mentioned below Nougat Beta 1028 has working Youtube working.
with MM no doesnt, always great on mine 👍 (feat. LG 55" and all framerate always fine 4K 60fps). coz nougat still beta version and no recommend except for develop only.
It stutters in 720p for me. I think the fix for me, is to buy a different media player. Mibox seemed like a good idea, but boy do I have regrets.
