The update instantly stopped my Shield running No Limits 8.2. Removing both cache and settings allowed Kodi to run. Reinstalling No Limits, no go.
I removed and reinstalled Kodi, No Limits stopped it again.
Directly loading raw Covenant is fine.
I'm guessing it's a skin issue, based on past issues.
My Note 8 with NL 8.2 took the upgrade like a champ.
For now, it looks like sideload 17.4 or load add ons singularly and avoid builds until the upgrade issues with TV get sorted.

Crashing on my Sony Android TV as well since updating. Wtf Kodi??
I'm on a shield and I get the same thing. I saw another shield user in an /r/kodi thread say they were too.
Doesn't seem very widespread though, maybe something related to configuration or plug ins? Have you tried clearing storage and see if that works?
I just updated and it works fine on my Mi Box. When does it crash? On opening, starting an add-on, while searching sources, or randomly after a few minutes?
I just updated, so maybe I haven't done the step that causes the crash?
Remove any kodi build crap and you update should run smooth as butter!
ive been on Kodi 18 for a while and its done the unusual thing of showing an update to kodi in the playstore.
had to turn of updates to avoid it messing up.
Same here. I have an H96 pro plus and an Nvidia shield TV. Both kept force closing last night. Through trial and error I determined that it was only builds that crashed. Kodi on it's own was fine. Had No limits magic kept crashing, I mean not even loading. Tried another build same thing. Deleted 17.5 and sideloaded 17.4 and now it works again.
Same issue here. Guess Google Play Store enabled auto-updates in the last system update on my Shield.
Not been able to downgrade. Currently a bit reluctant to uninstall or wipe data because I don't want to lose my setup but seems like I might have no choice.
EDIT: Updating to 17.5.1 has fixed the issue
