US folks: what cloud live TV service (Youtube TV, Hulu, Sling, etc) are you using, if any?

by untogethered

I bought an Nvidia Shield hoping I'd be able to jump on the bandwagon of these new cloud TV services, but I've been really disappointed at how few of them have Android TV apps, let alone pay attention to them.

It appears that neither YouTube TV nor Hulu have apps with their Live TV features included, so they're out immediately. It seems Playstation Vue and Sling do have live TV, so if anyone is using them I'd be interested to hear your experiences. Are there any others I've missed?

Overall I'm very disappointed with the platform for this reason alone. It might be a lot easier for me to just sell my Nvidia Shield and get a Chromecast instead, even though I hate everything being controlled by the phone.

Dude. Get an iptv provider. And not by searching Google. Read the iptv review list on /r/iptv. Flawless is solid for English channels and SmoothstreamsTV is great for American and sports.

Right now on my shield I have Netflix, Hulu, and live tv for 30 a month. And if you go with a real, pay iptv provider and not shitty ass dumb fucking Kodi addons, your uptime is nearly 100% on channels and all in HD.

If you care at all about sports, Vue is a better option over sling due to it being 60 fps vs only 30. Very noticeable on fast moving shows.

I've used Vue for about a year and love it, unlimited DVR, up to 5 devices, tons of app logins. Nice looking UI.

FuboTV is another sports centric option that has ATV app and is a lot cheaper due to not having Disney channels.

You can also look into getting an antenna and tuner, you can then record OTA channels on the Live Channels app for free. A very good supplement if any streaming service doesn't have all your locals.

Just an FYI, YouTube TV at this time doesn't support any TV platform other than Chromecast and Apple Airplay. If that is what you're looking at, you're going to be casting regardless. Additionally, your Shield has Chromecast Built-in, so it can do pretty much anything a Chromecast can do on top of its own capabilities.

As far as your question, I used Vue for a while and highly recommend it. They have probably the most mature product in the space, as far as features, reliability, and stream quality goes. I only left because Uverse gave me an offer I couldn't refuse.

SlingTV blue user here.

Just a note on Android TV vs Chromecast in my experience:. The picture quality is way, wayyyy better on Android TV. Chromecast is constantly shifting between HD and what I can only describe as video quality that looks like it belongs on Windows 95.

I've tried both sling and ps vue. I like them both. I can't say much for the live aspect as I hate commercials. The best use for me is favoriting all my shows and just watching them through the cloud dvr. Right now I'm liking sling more just due to comedy central. I also have an antenna and hd homerun along with an ssd connected to the shield so I can get ota shows and still avoid commercials. If you can change your habits to watch recorded shows, it makes these services so much better.

I also have a shield and I use PSVue. Tried Sling, but was not happy. I only use it for live sports (together with my OTA setup)

I use YouTube TV, which works amazingly well, especially now that I can cast and control via voice via my Google Homes. A native Android TV app should be coming in the next month or so.

I use Vue and really like it. 3 of the 4 major locals here and regional sports networks.

I use Direct TV now just because I got in on the Go big promo for $35/month. They threw in a free year of HBO since they had issues at the start. No Android TV app so that blows but can cast most channels. I also have free Apple TV they gave and a firestick in bedroom. Been really happy with channel lineup and my brother splits cost with me since two users can watch at a time

I use YouTube TV, casting to Chromecast. For channels that have Android TV apps, I use them on the Nexus Player.

That's because of greed, they want you to buy their more expensive cable service.

However please note that you can sideload ANY app you want, just like a normal android phone, just need to acquire the APK.
