Worth it to get android TV if I have an Xbox one s

by fodyshark

Do any of you have both an Xbox and android TV like the shield. I want one, but wondering if it's worth it.

Depends on what you wanna use a stb for. Is there something the Xbox doesn't do that you need?

For me I do a lot of IPTV stuff, so Android has the apps that blow away anything in the Microsoft ecosystem.

I use PS4 for gaming only, same for Xbox. I find that is really what they are made for. The extras are just that.

I did a Mi Box (AndroidTV) for my streaming cable, Kodi, Netflix, etc and love having a dedicated streaming device.

If you are looking at streaming only, I'd suggest a $70 Mi Box or $80 FireTV Box (Amazon's modified Android OS). If your into Apple that works great, but no Kodi and kinda expensive. I'd skip any streaming sticks and any Roku products. The Shield is good if you need more power than just streaming video.

I like the simple UI of the Shield but I haven't used an XB1 in a while.

Yes, the shield is a much much better media steamer than the x1. I have a Shield and an x1 hooked up to each of my TV's. The x1 is a dedicated gaming machine, Shield dedicated streaming machine.

I'm seriously considering getting the mi box just for pbs and Chromecast. I have an xbone, but it's just not the same experience as my deceased Nexus player.

Well, what do your want to do with it that you currently can't do with the Xbox One? That should be the question and only you can answer it.

If you have a 4k TV but a regular old Xbox One, that may be reason for a 4k capable Shield. If you want to use Kodi, hassle free, that may be another. If you like emulation or want to sideload apps you can do that easily on Android TV.

So if you really can make use of the added freedom, it may be worth it. But you may have no benefits whatsoever if you just stream Netflix and Amazon most of the time.

I have the xbox one s and the mi box. I find the menus on the xbox one s to be confusing for normal streaming. mi box is so much easier and to the point.

I got a smart TV, running Android after I had my Xbox One for a while. I don't use my Xbox one, except to game. The STB/built-in, gives me better control, on a single interface, and I don't get bugged by friends to game all the time, as they don't see me online.

And I save a bit of power, as the Xbox is in standby, not run.

The app selection alone is more than worth it. I've found the selection on Xbox one via Microsoft store pretty limited.
