Amazon Echo or Google Home? to control Shield Android TV with Harmony Hub

by Berardi1111

I'm more invested into the Google eco system, however I've heard Amazon has a stronger skill set. But really I'd like to know which will do a better job of controlling Logitech Harmony Hub with NVIDIA Shield TV. Or should I forget the whole idea of voice controlling my TV and stick with the hard remote?

I'm a bit confused... are you aware that your Shield TV essentially functions as a Google Home now that it received the Google Assistant update about a month ago?

The remote (the 2017 version) functions as an always listening microphone.

It works even when the Shield TV is in standby/off mode. The main downside is that it doesn't have a built in speaker, so you need it connected to something that can play sound if you want to hear responses ("Ok, turning off bedroom lights"). There are workarounds (an always on receiver, or a USB DAC)

Harmony works fine with Google Assistant, but you do have to have slightly awkward commands (OK Google, ask Harmony to turn on the TV. OK Google, ask Harmony to increase the volume.) BUT, you can create shortcut commands using Google Assistant, so "OK google, turn on the TV" is translated to "OK Google, ask Harmony to turn on the TV."

If you're already invested in the Google ecosystem, the Google Home is a no brainier.

The Home and Echo are so close these days it really is a toss up.

I even have my Echo hooked into Google Assistant, so I get the best of both worlds.

Harmony integration is better on the Echo than the Home. I find hue lights respond better on the Echo than the home .

Skills are nice but mostly garbage.

That said. I use my Echo to turn on and off the tv. Sometimes change the volume, however you cannot string commands together. So doing anything complicated requires the remote .

So managed expectations .

The Echo is more mature .

The home is catching up.

Pick your poison.

You can also add the SmartThings hub to your shield and gain extra control as well. I think it is shipping for $10 right now .

I have echo, ghome and harmony i would go with the echo for the porpose of controlling a hub the echo is much easier and has better intagration.

Go with the echo. I have both and the echo is more natural to use than the Google Home with the shield with the Google Home being especially useless. I've got the harmony elite I don't know if that has any bearing because it's my first harmony.

The Shield is a Google Home device so your question does NOT make any sense?

But in addition the Google Home is just a lot smarter than the Echo.
