This is driving me crazy trying to figure it out. It's connected via WiFi as it always has been. But this started happening suddenly around a week ago. My YouTube has been rendered useless and it can no longer play through any video, regardless of video length.
Same for casting from Chrome or any other casting app.
Also the controller refuses to reconnect after going to sleep. I have to pull the Shield's power cord and restart to use it again.
The only difference is they made the hardware smaller divided the Nvidia shield into two models.

Try to update the Nvidia shield to 6.1 first then.
Disable remove or discount any VPN or proxy or DNS Tools that maybe changing you're network.
Finally if that's not the problem check you're network speed from device open browser and type in Testmy•net
Make sure you have a download of at least 5 Mbps on the device for SD . 8mbps for 1080p.
Try to go into apps clear data and cache from YouTube .
Finally clear cache and data from Google cast app.
Sounds like your WiFi is the culprit.
That or if you have a bad sd card in the unit eject it and see if that helps.
Wait... There was a '16 model of Nvidia Shield?!
I only knew about the '15 and the '17 models; could someone please enlighten us with the differences between all the three models? Which one is the fastest?
Also, OP, have you tried clearing the app's cache?

If you want the controller I would order the $199 witch includes the controller because if you order the controller septate you might end up paying all together at 60$ for the controller. Better to bungle ..
Its only Youtube that has the buffering issue or all the apps?
If its all the apps, maybe a new router in your area is causing wifi interference. You can change your router channel to another one to avoid wifi interference.
