I don't suppose the Mi Box will do some sort of elegant downsampling that allows files encoded in 10 bit color to look relatively normal on a non-HDR display?

You need a AMLogic S905X or S912 box and run LibreELEC Kodi Krypton on it. Then HDR > SDR will look ok because support has been added. I would suggest a S912 box with Gigabit (1000M) LAN for 4K.
The NVIDIA Shield will look washed out too.
Good luck actually getting them to play smoothly if at all.
No. They definitely look washed out unfortunately.
