YouTube TV impressions.

  1. I appreciate the way it is set up. I like the 3 sections. It looks clean. I sort of like the oversized text.
  2. Lack of live channels app integration is disappointing. I didn't necessarily expect it because it is a streaming service, but it would have been nice.
  3. Starting a show that you are recording late: It should start you from the beginning instead of taking you to live.
  4. Fast forward/rewind is not ideal with the shield remote. You need to select the progress bar, click right, and then go back down and click play again. Lots of needless button clicks.

I think it compares well to PS Vue. I hope they fix some of these relatively small issues.

number 3 is a big issue with sports. They really need to fix that.
But otherwise I have been loving youtube tv. I have been a cord cutter for a few years and youtube tv has made it easier.

The interface is terrific. Very clean, easy to navigate. No ads cluttering valuable real estate in the program guide grid, which cable companies love to do.

Youtube TV is new, and I think it's a decent possibility that they address some of these in the future. But here's my wishlist:

  • My number 1 issue: when skipping commericals if you skip a few, pause, and then decide you'd like to skip a couple more times, you have to move the focus from the play/pause button and on to the time slider. It's annoying and causes two extra button clicks or so.

  • When starting a game that you've recorded but is in progress, I almost always want to start from the beginning, but Youtube TV will start it live. This is annoying if you're trying to avoid seeing the score. You have to seek back to the beginning of the show and hope you didnt peak the score while doing so. There should be a menu prompt for these shows regarding if you want to start from beginning or live.

  • It'd be nice if there was an option to choose how many seconds are used when clicking the skip forward and skip backwards buttons).

  • I wish I could set "Live" TV as the default tab when launching YouTube TV (as opposed to "Home", which has a mixture of live programming, shows I haven't finished, and Movies that they are featuring)

  • The ability to record x minutes before or after a program. Sports regularly go over the allotted time, and not having a way to ensure you catch the end can be frustrating. I'm sure they'll get this fixed though.

Edit: Damn, your feedback items 1, 3, and 4 are things i've been thinking about to. I guess that means there's a likelihood some of these issues are addressed.

I agree 100% about rewinding/fast forwarding. Thankfully, the app responds to the rewind/fast forward/play controls on my Harmony remote without having to do all that arrow button stuff. Unfortunately, I only have Harmony in my living room with my Shield and not in my bedroom with my Nexus Player.

Mine kept saying "Something went wrong" when signing in. So...

Can someone in a different zipcode (family member) use your account?

I keep finding a lot of weird UI confusions. For example if you go to the search bar, do a search, and then try to go back to the home page you have to push left to get out of the search icon, but it's visually not very clear.

Another example is when browsing channels. I was trying to record the 3 MLS games on Sunday so I searched for MLS and selected the MLS league. Then I scrolled to 'Upcoming' and could see the games. Once I selected one I could add to library to record. Great. Now I push the back button and it went back to the search results. So I had to select MLS, scroll to upcoming, etc.

In general lots of small UI type software issues but I really like it.

I can't switch though since I can't get TNT/TBS and I need that for NBA. I'm not going to pay for this and cable, but I'll be keeping an eye since TNT/TBS seems to be the only missing thing, although I don't think it's really going to save money.

No Live Channels integration?

That's it. I'm either upgrading to a better Roku or looking at an AppleTV. Google has clearly lost the plot. Between the way they've completely broken the YouTube app, the ridiculous delay in providing an app for their own platform and another example of them not supporting their own platform by not showcasing what should be possible with the Live Channels app makes it clear to me waiting around and hoping things get better is a waste of time. Google is too busy eating stupid pills.

I was trying to save up for the ShieldTV (because I still like some of games available) but there's no point when the platform is burning this hard. I'd be better off with upgrading a generic computer and plugging it into my TV and using Kodi.
