Shield TV: How is the mic range and sensitivity?

by bdg004

I'm thinking about picking up a shield, now that it is on sale. I have a Google Home, and was curious as to how sensitive the mic is, and how good the range is for Google Assistant. Considering moving my Google Home to another room. Thanks in advance.

I have not been impressed. Usually it just never triggers on the keyword unless I’ve purposely moved the controller recently and hold it close to me. I ended up disabling it and just use the mic button on the remote to trigger it if I want it.

Great idea, very poor implementation.

Works pretty well for me.

About two to three metres works well for me. Quiet room. I have the controller constantly plugged in and listening. It is a slow Google Assistant for sure, comparing to a Google home for example.

My kitchen is open to the living room. I have a GH mini in the kitchen and a Shield in the living room. They are about as far apart as they can be (~25ft) and when I have assistant listening on the Shield, it beats the mini to the punch answering even if I'm right next to the mini.

I actually had to turn listening off on the Shield because it would pick up and respond so quickly. But with the entertainment center turned off I would never hear the output.

It’s quite ordinary. Often have to yell, even when the controller is only a few metres away. It’s quite slow, too.

So it sounds like it's not as good as the Google Home. Disappointing, but not unexpected, since that isn't its main function.

Range is great if it's some what quiet I can issue commands from across the room with no problem. It doesn't seem to isolate as well as the Google Home does.

With that said, I've still been trying to use it more over the Echo that sits next to it.
