Strongly considering Shield TV

by StarCitizen_aurora

Just got a new job and strongly considering buying a Shield TV. A lot of this post is a brain dump so I'll cross out everything I've already figured out. This guy is going to replace a my old gaming PC AMD 9950BE and a GTX 560 Ti 448 Core (handme down). That old PC is going to be turned into an OMV box so HDD on the shield isn't important so going for the 16GB version.

Media

  • Kodi
  • Netflix
  • HBOGo
  • Amazon
  • Youtube
  • Spotify
  • Xfinity
  • Karaoke? I'd like something better than just YouTube, also free

Gaming

More of a secondary concern but something I want to have. I tried the whole steam streaming from my gaming PC to the media center, but it was WiFi all the way, it only worked when no one was on the network and even then it would randomly go to hell. Improving the network is also on my to do list, so not something that can be dismissed outright. Maybe electrical, or maybe replacing the Comcast router with something good.

  • Emulation Station (RetroPie) looks easy enough to add, and the Shield should have more than enough power for it
  • Parsec looks to be my best bet for streaming as I have an AMD card, looks like they have an app
  • Steam streaming isn't an option correct?

Input

It comes with a controller and a remote which is nice, but the remote seems a bit skimpy in functions and local coop is good.

  • How's support of 3rd party remotes, I have a cheap media remote with a KB on the back and with air mouse abilities.
  • Any good IOS apps for general control, I've got a few for Kodi but they won't be able to manage other apps?
  • Is there a go to super cheap tablet for only controlling media centers?
  • I have an Xbox360 dongle and 3 controllers.
  • Steam controller that I would like to use, I'm seeing a lot of hacks. Not that I ever learned how to use it but would be nice to sit on the couch an play Destiny 2 / Overwatch.
  • Voice command looks like a lot of fun, but I don't know where to begin asking questions. Never got a good enough Mic solution on my HTPC

Interface

The thing I was most proud of in my media center was how I got everything working together I had Kodi able to launch Steam Big Picture, new movies, sub category of all movies, new TV episodes, and sub category of all episodes. Steam had all of its stuff and then a link to jump back to Kodi. No mouse control needed, I could never get streaming apps to work well enough (which is actually why I'm doing this), other than YouTube (plenty of jank).

  • Can I set up a custom home page, and Nvidia isn't going to overwrite is with whatever they want to show me?
  • If not can I set up Kodi to launch other applications on Android? Basically have Kodi be my interface for the ShieldTV and have the ShieldTV home page be launch Kodi

Anything else I should know?, or am not taking into consideration

Is there any interest for karaoke apps for Android TV ? Also, if I do come through I don't think I can publish it for free.. maybe a nominal one time purchase

Steam streaming is supported out-of-the-box provided you have an 700-series or greater Nvidia GPU. Moonlight also works reasonably well and has better support for 3rd party controllers.

I believe streaming with AMD & Intel GPUs is possible with 3rd party apps (eg. Remotr ), but I imagine quality and latency will be significantly worse than the 1st party/Nvidia gamestream option.

As someone that just picked up a Shield TV I can tell you that if you've got Comcast/Xfinity, you're in for disappointment. You literally cannot activate HBO Go or Xfinity streaming on an android TV box, they will not let you do it. I ended up just cancelling HBO through Comcast and figure that when West World comes back, I'll get HBO Now, since that will work fine.

Comcast makes it out to sound like this complicated technical issue that they're working through but it works fine through every other provider, they just think of Android TV boxes as a threat to their model somehow.

You can log into HBO on your phone and cast to the shield. Not ideal but that's Comcast

As for the remote. The system and it's apps are designed to work with this remote. Those air mice and keyboard remotes will work too. Bluetooth and SUB. For those apps that are not optimized for Android TV you may want to sideload.

as a sidenote you cannot change the homepage, however you can install Lineage OS apparently
