Google Home Integration

by nathankferguson

Here's what I'm trying to accomplish:

Tell Google Home to 'Turn On' or 'Turn Off' TV.

I do not have a Harmony Remote (nor do I really want one), but I do have a Shield TV connected.

I thought this would be a simple command to understand as my Shield TV through CEC controls the TV power (so basically turn on shield, tv turns on. Turn off shield, tv turns off, vice versa whatever)

So what ends up happening is I say 'Turn on Shield' and it does exactly what I want. HOWEVER - Google Home then continues to elaborate on a long phrase about not being able to control the tv power because it is not yet configured or whatever. Every. Single. Time.

What do you guys do to circumvent this or is there a simpler solution I am blind to (ifttt, phrases etc.)?

Thanks!

I've been using the phrase "ok Google, turn on/off the TV". This has been getting me the desired effect. Using a shield tv 2017 connected to the TV using cec power on/off controls.

I have at any given time 3 devices in the living room that will respond to the command, so I'm unsure of which device is actually issuing the command. (Two phones, one shield)

Edit: I guess also make sure that the shield is configured to use cec power on and off, I think they might be set to off by default.

So I've just created a Google Assistant shortcut so that when I say 'Turn on the TV', in reality it is telling the assistant to 'Turn on the shield'. Plus, this stops the assistant from blabbing on for another 10 seconds. Hopefully this will help somebody!

I get something similar when I ask "Hey Google, turn on my TV". It'll turn on my TV successfully, then wait a minute before telling me it couldn't do it even though the TV is on. It'll turn off my TV successfully but give no response. Kinda strange but the actual functionality is there.

What’s so stupid is that this apparently works for the various Android TV devices and for the Chromecast devices, but I’d you actually bought a Sony Bravia AndroidTV with all the built in functionality, it doesn’t do anything.
