Just as the title states, I have a Nvidia shield tv and I use the Android TV app and for some reason it won't open. It just shuts down. I've never had a app do this. Curious if anyone else is experiencing this? Thanks.

Perhaps they meant the Phone app to use as a remote? If so, try going into settings and clearing the cache of the app, it's worth a shot.
I take it you're talking about the Android TV remote control app? If so ive had problems with it before, being unusable on my Nexus 6 but i think it was an issue with the phone somehow. Not had problems on my phones since
I've never heard of an Android TV app... There's YouTube TV, but not Android TV... The Nvidia Shield runs on Android TV. It'ss not an app... It's an OS
