Why cant the YouTube app stay in background?

by ProgrammerPlus

We all know how horrible the new YouTube (web) app is. But the most annoying thing about it is how it cant stay in the background and has to start up with splash screen everytime we open it, even on powerful device like Shield TV.

The point of this post is to check if I'm the only one seeing this behavior?

I wonder how well OGYoutube or Newpipe work sideloaded on Android TV. Pretty well I would imagine, though an air mouse or some other type of mouse functionality might be required to get full use out of them.

They both allow playing of youtube videos in the background and downloading of videos. And neither of those apps force a refresh just because the app loses the focus.

Funny you should mention this.

It also annoyed the hell out of me that I couldn't pause a youtube video, hit the home button, go check out another app and come back to the YouTube video to resume what I had paused. No, the YouTube app would just completely reload and I would have to go and navigate back to wherever the video was and then seek to where I had paused it originally.

So I uninstalled the latest web version and went back to the old one and found it does the exact same. I guess I just never noticed.

It's really friggin' annoying.

I noticed that Plex had a PIP feature and I was like damn this is great I can browse YouTube or Netflix but continue to watch what I am watching.

YouTube is missing so much functionality on their TV platforms it's unreal.

If you think the Android app is bad you should see the AppleTV Youtube app

Umm... is this like the YouTube Red thing that exists in regular android?

Gotta disagree with your premise. I love the current app

I watch YouTube, so I've never needed to background it.
