Shield TV Universal remotes

by TotesFabulous

Hi guys,

I have been trying to research this for a while but I am having trouble finding any threads/articles related to my specific need. I have a Shield TV 2017. I also have few other IR devices. Currently to control these, I am using a Harmony Hub...but I HATEEEEEEEEE the Harmony hub/controller so much and I want to stop using it/find an alternative.

All I want is a universal remote that has Bluetooth support so that the Shield TV will be able to use it. I don't want any special features or keyboards. Are there any suggestions?

I tried using my old PS3 BD Remote which has Bluetooth and would be a perfect candidate...but, android requires a pin when setting up Bluetooth and I have looked all around the internet and I cannot find a PIN that works. I am not sure if the PS4 remote has the same issue.

There isn't anything better or close to the Harmony Hubs right now. I realize everyone wants to crucify them right now for the Link, but we all need to face up to the fact there isn't anything close at the moment. And switching to another manufacturer isn't going to change the core concern. Open source is going to be hard to get off the ground because there is a hardware component to all this.

I don't recall entirely what the deal was with the Sony remotes because it's been several years, but they are somehow tied to the PlayStation.

What makes you hate the Harmony Hub? There isn't a packaged Bluetooth capable remote that I'm aware of to replace it.

I have zero experience with it, but I know some people here use Flirc USB adapters for this. I can't say this would meet your needs entirely, but it should allow you to use any IR universal remote with the Shield TV, and for cheap too.

I'd second the Flirc idea. I've been using it with my shield since I got it in 2015. I use it with a one4all universal remote that cost about €25.

Im primarily using the box with kodi so it allows me to map proper playback keys, way beyond the number offered by an Android TV remote. IR might be a bit old school but it works perfectly.

Did you try using cec control? With TV remote or shield remote, I got the basics i need to control the shield. It isn't perfect but enable me to control TV, amp, shield. Another alternative is to use your phone with android TV remote app
