How's the multi controller support in the Nvidia Shield Tv working nowadays?

by juditasdude

Hi!

I'll be getting a Shield in the next couple of days and wondering how is the multi controller support working.
One of the main reasons to buy this would be to use the local streaming feature and be able to play couch co op many games with my girlfriend and friends.
I'll have the Shield controller, 2 wired Xbox 360 and 1 Playstation 3 controller.

I'd love to have 4 players on the Shield for those Overcooked and Battleblock Theater sessions with friends, but most of the time I'll be playing just 2 players with my girlfriend.

Does it depend on the game? the controller? any tips I shoud now? It'd be amazing if I could use the PS3 controller since it's bluetooth and that'd mean no cables, but I'd have no problems using the Xbox wired controllers if that meant better performance.

Some of the games I'd like to play are:

  • Castle Crashers
  • Battleblock Theater
  • Broforce (Expendabros)
  • Overcooked
  • Duck Game
  • Towerfall Ascension
  • Lovers in a dangerous spacetime
  • Crypt of the Necrodancer
  • Helldivers
  • Caveblazers
  • Terraria
  • The Binding Of Isaac
  • Move Or Die
  • Trine 2
  • Speedrunners
  • Ibb & Obb
  • Door Kickers: Action Squad

Thanks a lot for reading this wall of text!!

Your PS3 controller should work with your Shield TV, but you need to use a USB cable to pair them. Pairing directly with Bluetooth with pin code won't work. Once paired, it should show up in the settings menu, under remote & accessories. The lights on the controller will always flash even when it's connected to the Shield. I have one paired to my Shield TV and works fine in the few games I play (mostly emulators) - I really prefer it's D pad over the one on my 1st gen Shield TV. Also, the PS3 controller won't turn itself off automatically when paired to the Shield, so remember to press and hold the PS button for 10-20s to switch it off when you're done.

I literally have none of those games, but I have the following four controllers paired with my ShieldTV:

  • Shield Controller (2nd gen)
  • OUYA controller
  • OUYA controller
  • OUYA controller

They all work well with multiplayer, though there are some games (Shield-specific) that have trouble recognizing button presses from OUYA controllers.

Multi controller works fine on Android, but streaming is unreliable. It usually only detects one.

I have the shield since yesterday and I've been facing some issues to connect 2 controllers (2 wired xbox 360 and that adapter ). I used to play on Steam link and everything worked fine.

The recurrent issue is that Shield only detects one controller. A working solution is to use Moonlight application instead of Nvidia application.

Was having all the same problems until i found this absolute GEM of a program. It fixed everything for me. Just make sure you have your controllers ON, and then start up the moonlight app. Literally every single game works now as intended. For the record, I'm using 4 XBOX360 wireless controllers with the official Microsoft wireless dongle attached to my Shield

Moonlight (install on your Shield): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.limelight&hl=en&rdid=com.limelight
